Handwriting Without Tears

Summary from Handwriting Without Tears website:
"The goal of Handwriting Without Tears® is to make legible and fluent handwriting an easy and automatic skill for all students. The unique and compelling curriculum design and teaching strategies facilitate this goal.

The curriculum uses multi-sensory techniques and consistent habits for letter formation to teach handwriting to all students—Pre-K through Cursive. In addition, HWT provides parents and teachers the instructional techniques and activities to help improve a child's self-confidence, pencil grip, body awareness, posture and so much more!"

REVIEW
I have not actually used this curriculum but through my supervising teaching and other sources have heard great things about it. I believe it was developed for students with special needs in mind. However, as with many approaches designed for students with special needs, the innovative styles appeal to a wide range of children with or without special needs. Many moms I have talked with whose children were average or above average ability learners said that they and their children found handwriting tedious. (It seems like this is especially true for boys but occasionally girls struggle with this as well.)

This curriculum offers systematic method of learning to write that makes sense developmentally and includes a number of multisensory methods which engage the learner. The kids seem to love it and actually do learn how to write! The name says it all and the reviews I am hearing agree that this program delivers. It teaches kids to write without tears!
