Learning to Write Manuscript: Grade 1
Learning to Write Manuscript: Grade 1

By Essential Learning Products

This handwriting series published by Essential Learning Products provides simple instruction in letter formation for both capital and lowercase letters as well as models and practice pages. It utilizes Zaner-Bloser style of handwriting and is a half-size book. According to the back cover, these smaller lessons give "learners greater confindence and more opportunity for success".

The series also includes:
Getting Ready to Write: Pre-K/Kindergarten
Learning to Write Manuscript: Grade 1
Mastering Manuscript: Grade 2
Learning to Write Cursive: Grade 3
Improving Cursive: Grade 4
Mastering Cursive: Grades 5 and Up

We began using this series this year when I noticed my children were not forming their letters correctly in their written work. We began these books and I immediately noticed an improvement in their writing. They utilize a simple, basic format and clearly present the strokes needed for proper letter formation.

I like the simple, quick style of these books. They are purely handwriting and do not include pictures or other information that I have found in other handwriting books which I thought complicated the lessons. My boys were able to focus just on letter formation and have really enjoyed these books. The books are half size and my boys do seem to like that style. It seems much less intimidating and a lesson is easily achievable in 15 min. or less. The books are affordable too. We have enjoyed and benefited from this series.
