This is a great historical fiction novel to read when studying the Middle Ages. As you journey through its pages, you join 12-year old Hans Dunne who finds himself working in the shop of the famous Johann Gutenberg. Filled with mystery and adventure, this book is very entertaining and also educational as it relays information about everyday life at the time, the apprenticeship system, the developement of the printing press, and much more. We used it as a read aloud with our 3rd grader, 1rst grader, and preschooler and they all followed the story, enjoyed the time with the book, and retained information about the time period as a result of listening to it being read.
