Teaching With JoyHistory ... Old Testament Days: An Activity Guide | ||

by: Nancy Sanders
This book contains more than 80 projects from the Old Testament Days drawn from archaeological evidence and Bible descriptions. Some of the activities include 'feasting' on a desert picnic of dried figs, goat’s milk cheese, fake grasshopper biscuits, and lentil stew, or making a loose tunic like the one young Isaac wore on his family's trip to the Promise Land. There are also instructions on how to make ancient musical instruments, games, and crafts which reflect the ancient time period. Each activity has a short section describing an historical event or the significance of each activity. REVIEW We are currently studying ancient history using the Well Trained Mind with our 7, 5, and 3 year olds. I find this era fascinating, however I have found it difficult to find quality, age appropriate resources for this time period. In addition, I discovered my own knowledge was somewhat limited in this area. :) I was thrilled to find this book at a homeschool conference and it hasn't disappointed us. As we are working through early history, this book has supplied us with fun ideas to make this time period come alive to my boys. There is a great emphasis on Abraham and figures from the Old Testament which really has complimented my attempts to base early history on that Biblical framework. It has meshed well with the Well Trained Mind curriculum as well. The activities are not hard, but ones I would never have thought to create. They are not too complicated and do not require intricate supplies (which I appreciate). You do have to do some planning to gather materials but nothing terribly unusual. I especially appreciated the small bits of historical background before each section. They helped me to figure out whether or not to include that activity in our lessons and where to put the ones I did choose. You may not do every activity, however, I have found that for those of us who enjoy activities to help make history fun, this book is a great resource especially considering the limited number of resources in this time period. You can certainly adjust the activities as would suit your family, but I would recommend this book for ages 5-12.
