A great book to read to get a feel for life during the Early American time period. It has as its main character Constance Andersen who goes to stay with Sarah Macomber, an older woman, on her farm while her parents are away in the West Indies. A trip which in those days took several months. Constance learns alot about farming, keeping house, doing without, and getting through tough times in the mountains of Vermont. This book takes place in 1788 and includes the real life historical character of Ethan Allen. It was first published in 1936 and was illustrated by Margeurite De Angeli. A great independent read for 2nd or 3rd grade and up and a great read aloud for all ages.
