The Story of Holly and Ivy
by Rumer Godden, pictures by Barbara Cooney

"At Christmastime, wishes have power to make dreams come true, especially if you wish very hard and your wish touches another's heart. Ivy, who has lived at St. Agnes's orphanage for all of her six years, wants a home for the holidays more than anything else. She is sure a grandmother is waiting for her, perhaps in Appleton, so she sets out to find her. And she wishes very hard." At the same time, a lonely, childless couple in Appleton wish they had someone to share their Christmas with. Holly, a doll in Mr. Blossom's toy shop, makes a wish too...she wants a girl for Christmas. In this lovely story, the author manages to bring all three wishes together for a heart warming conclusion. Originally published in 1957, this is a classic Christmas Story that we all enjoyed. Recommended for ages 5 and up, but even my 11 year old daughter loved it!
